What is Depron?

Depron is a 3 or 6 millimeter thin insulation sheet manufactured of fully recycled material, free from Freon and Halogen. The sheet is produced from foamed polystyrene, a material that does not age. The cell structure in the sheet is built up of fine, closed cells that give it its excellent physical and mechanical characteristics.

Why use Depron  for ribs?

Depron is a versatile material, many people use it to make entire models as it is tough and durable.  We found it only suitable for certain applications in larger models especially those designed for glow applications.  We use Depron for ribs as it is light and extremely stable. Once wrapped in balsa the wing can be covered without fear of melting the foam.  Depron is also flexible and impact resistant, it will not shatter and split like balsa, so performs better when you have those minor knocks and dings on landing!

Gluing Depron

Depron is a porous material and take glue well, just note that Depron when cut and glued along this edge does soak up the glue!  We have found that UHU-Por or white wood glue is best for all round gluing, especially on the edge grain.  Foam Safe Cyano used only for face to face gluing, not saying that it cannot be used on edges, but we have found it soaks quickly into the grain.  Whatever you decide to use make sure it is foam friendly, or test it on a scrap piece first!!
